St John’s have had a very strong relationship with Greenvale School for over twenty years. Our Year 6 pupils take part in a weekly project, designed to bring together children from very different learning communities. The children engage in a range of different activities, such as paired support work, dance and music as well as team building activities. The sessions are split between St John’s and Greenvale School.
Links to our local community
Interwoven into the initial curriculum is a thorough programme of alternative learning experiences, including our link with Greenvale, a local special school. Year 6 pupils partner-up with students with severe learning and physical difficulties to share learning experiences on a Friday afternoon. Using value words such as respect and friendship and the learning powers of problem solving and collaboration in real contexts, enables a child to become self-aware and more emotionally intelligent. They develop the resilience needed in the face of challenge and the empathy to become a citizen who contributes to their community.
This year we are working towards a Bronze, Level 1 . The arts awards are a range of unique qualifications that support anyone up to 25 to grow as artists and art leaders, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world. They achieve this award by: taking on challenges in art form; participating in arts activities; through the experience of arts events; by getting inspired by artists and sharing their ideas with others and by creating a portfolio to keep a record of their creative journey.
Year 6 pupils will be supporting the Greenvale students to achieve this award by planning art pieces together, recording activities and helping the children to produce their portfolios.
