Friday 29th January

English

LI: To write a story.

  • Use your plan to help you write each stage
  • use capital letters and full stops
  • use adjectives to add description

Challenge - Use expanded noun phrases and try to use an exclamation mark, if it is appropriate to do so.

Today I want you to write your story plans up into a full story. Use the plans you made yesterday carefully to help you write each stage. How are you going to start your story? See some story starters here to help you.

I wrote my story out based on my plan. You can see it below, can you see how I have used my plan from yesterday?

Little Tail Speaks to the Stars

One day, long ago there was a small family of monkeys that lived in a tree house. The tree house was at the top of the tallest tree, deep in the leafy green forest. Little Tail lived with her mum and dad and her annoying older brother. Sometimes she was lonely.

Little Tail would look out of their cosy, wooden tree house at night and look at the beautiful stars in the dark sky. She knew they sparkled brightly just for her and she wanted to speak to them but she was too far away. Little Tail would beg the stars to come closer, sometimes shouting at the top of her voice. They didn’t answer, they were too far away.

One day she was walking by the river and found a huge, colourful shell. She brought it home and held it tightly all night. She tried calling out to the stars as usual but this time she heard a small voice reply! It was coming from the shell. She spoke back into the shell and found it was a magic shell that let her speak to the stars. She spoke to them every night and was never lonely again.

The End

Phonics

LI: To revise alternative spellings for the /oa/ phoneme.

We have thought about 4 ways of spelling the /oa/ sound this week. Today we are going to practice them. Have a paper and pencil ready for our session in the morning! You can practice them further with this worksheet

Maths

LI: To interpret pictograms.

  • Link the pictograms the objects you are counting
  • Draw pictograms at a 1:1 scale with the object you count

Now you are experts at drawing pictograms we are going to learn how to read them. Watch the video below, pausing and joining in with your worksheet when told to. Check your answers here

Science

LI: To observe and record which materials float and sink.

Our topic this half term has been about materials. Today's lesson is about which materials do and do not float. Click on this link and watch the video lesson before having a go at this worksheet. You can even do the experiment at home with the video, you will need a bowl of water, a pencil, a rock, some cotton wool and a coin. Don't worry if you do not have these things as you can watch the experiment being done in the video.

Computing

LI: To learn what coding is.

Do you remember our lesson last week where we learnt how important it is to give exact instructions. This is very true of computer coding. Watch this BBC bitesize video about coding before trying the game underneath where you need to choose what type of objects you can 'code'.

 Thursday 28th January

English

LI: To plan a story.

  • You are not writing a full story, just planning each stage
  • Think about what happens at each stage of your story
  • Use adjectives to add description.

Today you are going to plan your own story version of 'How to Catch a Star'. You can change any of the details you wish, just be as creative as you like! You can see the template to use here. Don't worry if you can't print it off, just write each stage in your book. You can see my example below.

Reading

Today we will be reading about how farmers turn milk into cheese. Check your answers on the second page.

Value Work

Next week we are going to have a new value word. This month, you have told me what

perseverance means and you have told me what you have had to persevere with.

Now I would like you to think about what you want to persevere with. Tell me three things that you want to be able to do that you cannot do yet.

Something Extra

I Have also put this into the 'useful links' section at the top, Audible have a selection of audio books for children that can be listened to for free. Follow this link

Tuesday 26th January

English

LI: To add description to a sentence.

  • Use adjectives
  • Start with a capital letter and have a full stop at the end of the sentence
  • Increase the amount of detail with every stage

Today I want you to practise stretching your sentences to include more detail.

Write a stretchy sentence to describe a star and at least two other stretchy sentences of your choice.

You will start with an expanded noun phrase about the star, using your adjectives from yesterday.

Here is an example:

WHO - The shining star.

WHAT - The shining star is glistening.

WHEN - In the middle of the night, the shining star is glistening.

WHERE – In the middle of the night, the shining star is glistening in the sky.

WHY – In the middle of the night, the shining star is glistening in the sky to say hello to the people stargazing.

Maths

LI: To make tally charts.

  • To make marks that correspond to the number of objects.
  • To mark the 5th tally in every 5 at a diagonal line.
  • To count tally marks.

Yesterday you practiced making tally charts for the first time. We're going to build on that today. Watch the video below and join in when asked to with your worksheet. You can check your work with the answers here

Music

We are going to learn about the pulse that you can find in music today. Watch the video by following this link. Have a teddy ready to join you to help with the lesson!

Art

LI: To draw an animal in stages.

Today we are going to learn how to draw some animals. These animals are from a story called Ronald the Rhino and if you like you can read that first by clicking on the picture below.  When you are ready click on this link to have a go at drawing some of the animals from the story. If you like, send me your pictures on Dojo so I can see them!

Monday 25th January

English

This week all your tasks will be based around the book ‘How to Catch a Star’ by Oliver Jeffers. Can you remember any other books we have looked at by Oliver Jeffers?

If you do not have a copy of this book at home, you can watch the book being read aloud here:

Today I would like you to come up with as many adjectives as you can to describe a star. Be as adventurous with your vocabulary as you can.

Learning intention (LI): To choose and write adjectives.

  • Choose appropriate adjectives to describe the star.
  • Choose and find interesting adjectives (not basic ones like: big, small, yellow).
  • Use your phonics to help spell the words.

Challenge: Use some expanded noun phrases.

Reading Comprehension

Some of our readings this week will be based on farm life. Today is one about a scarecrow's job. Check your answers on the second page.

Phonics

Today you are going to focus on the 'o-e' split digraph, as in home. Watch the video below and join in with saying words out loud and writing when told to, have a paper and pencil ready.

Maths

We are now moving onto a new topic - statistics. Can you tell what a simple definition of statistics is in our Zoom call this afternoon?

Today's activity is focused on making tally charts. You will be doing more of this tomorrow in more detail but for today I want you to watch the video. When you are watching the video be sure to pause when you are told to so that you can join in and answer the questions in your books or on your whiteboards. This will get us used to the ide of making tally marks so that we can fully participate in tomorrow's lesson.

LI: To make tally charts.

  • To make marks that correspond to the number of objects.
  • To mark the 5th tally in every 5 at a diagonal line.
  • To count tally marks.

RE

LI: To understand the symbolism of items on the Seder plate.

Last week we looked at the story of Passover. This week we will learn how Jewish people remember the story of Passover with a special meal every year, this is the Seder (pronounced 'say-der) Meal.

Watch this video of a recap of the Passover Story and a quick introduction to the Seder Meal.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z68dxnb

Now you can either (or do both) look at the short series of videos below or look at this power point presentation to learn more about the Seder Meal and how all the items on the plate relate to the story of Passover.

Video option

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Once you have learnt about the items on the plate complete this worksheet where you need to explain each item on the plate. Answers are on the second page.

Friday 22nd January

English Activities and Reading Comprehension

Today's English work is an activity pack that combines a comprehension as well as some vocabulary and grammar activities all based on Florence Nightingale! The reading section contains two different types of poems and the questions are all based around them. Answers are at the bottom.

Personal Reading

Make sure you do at least 15 mins of reading each day, hopefully a lot more!  If you don't have access to many physical books at home to can visit Oxford Owl for a selection of free e-books to read.

Phonics

We have thought about several ways to make the /igh/ sound this week. Today you need to practice spelling words using several different ways of making the /igh/ sound - 'igh' 'ie' i-e' and 'y'.

Maths

We will be dividing by 10 today. Hopefully you are feeling more confident with division and seeing the relationship between multiplication and division. I would suggest you write out the 10 times table to warm up before you start this lesson. Watch the below video and complete the worksheet

You can check your answers here

Science

I want you to think about the work we have done in thinking about the properties of everyday materials. Complete these sheets where you will need to choose the most appropriate word to describe some materials as well as working on your vocabulary to describe them. Answers are at the bottom.

Computing

Last week I asked you to find out what an algorithm is. Today I want you to have a go at writing your own algorithm, a set of instructions for making your favourite sandwich - I would advise  that you think of something simple to make!

For a computer algorithm to work it needs to be exact and precise, the computer will only do what you have told it to. I want you to be as precise when writing your instructions - watch this video to show how careful you need to be. The video is VERY American but it does a good job of showing why you must think carefully about what you write.

When you have watched the video have a go at writing them down and seeing if someone else in your house can follow them.

Thursday 21st January

English

Today I want you to write your own list of 'Would you rather?' questions. Try and think of as many as you possibly can. When you are coming up with them try to make it a difficult choice. If the question was 'Would you rather have £100 or £1?' you wouldn't have to think very hard about the answer. Once you have written your questions why don't you ask someone in your house what their responses would be.

Extension activity:

If you really want to challenge yourself why don't you make your questions into a board game? You could try the below template where you need to use a dice to find out which square you land on and when you do land you need to answer the question on the box.

Reading

Our reading comprehension today gives you an idea of where to stay safe during a storm. Answers are on the second page.

Personal Reading

Make sure you do at least 15 mins of reading each day, hopefully a lot more!  If you don't have access to many physical books at home to can visit Oxford Owl for a selection of free e-books to read.

Phonics

Today we will be investigating the different words we can make using the 'ie' digraph. If you can, cut out the letters and rearrange into as many words as you can. If you cannot print or cut out the words, just use the letters and sounds to write as many combinations as you can think of in your book. Answers are on the last page.

Maths

Today we are going to continue with our division work and think about dividing by 5. It might be helpful to warm up by counting in 5s and writing out the 5 times table! Watch the video below and join in when you are asked to with your worksheet. Check your work with the answers

History

Our final lesson thinking about Florence Nightingale. We have learnt about Florence, who she was and what she was. Today I want you to think in slightly more detail about what she actually changed in the hospital at Scutari when she went to the Crimean War.

Use this sheet to write down what she started doing in the hospital and what she got rid of. There are some ideas on the second sheet.

Think back to what we have already learnt about, maybe rewatch some of the videos we saw below and think about how she changed the hospital. This presentation may help as well

When you have finished you can colour in this picture of Florence.

Wednesday 20th January

English

Today I want you to persuade from the other point of view! Take your three questions from yesterday and imagine you had chosen the other option for one of them. What could you say for that option to make it a good choice?

It is an important skill to be able to consider another point of view to your own and that is why I have asked you to practice it today.

For example, I would choose to be the size of a house instead of the size of an ant and explain my reasons for that choice. eg - I would rather be the size of a house instead of the size of an ant so that I would be able to have a good view of everything around me. If I wanted to go somewhere I would be able to do so very quickly, but if I was the size of an ant it would take me a long time to travel to places.

Below I have put a new conjunctions word bank to support your answers.

Reading

Today's reading is about what to do if you see a Tsunami coming your way! Check your answers on the second page.

Personal Reading

Make sure you do at least 15 mins of reading each day, hopefully a lot more!  If you don't have access to many physical books at home to can visit Oxford Owl for a selection of free e-books to read.

Phonics

This week we have been thinking about the /igh/ sound spelt in different ways. Can you be a phoneme detective and spot all the /igh/ sounds in this text?

Maths

Today we are going to think about odd and even numbers. This is linked to the 2 times table. Watch the video below, joining in with your worksheet when you are asked to do so.

You can check your work with the answers here

Art

Today in Art I would like you to think about primary and secondary colours. Do you know which primary colours to mix to get different secondary colours? Try this quiz on a powerpoint slide here - click on the question marks to get the answers.

Once you have done that can you make me a poster with either paints or colouring pencils, showing the primary colours and how to get the secondary ones?

Try to design your own or use this template

Tuesday 19th January

English

Pick three of your favourite questions from yesterday’s task and write down your answers in your neatest, cursive handwriting.

Make sure that you answer the questions in full sentences, expanding on your ideas from Monday. Use a range of conjunctions to support this; choose from the word bank below. Challenge yourself to use as many of these as possible.

Example:

Would you rather be the size of an ant or the size of a house?

I would rather be the size of an ant because I would be able to hide in small places. If I were the size of a house, I wouldn’t be able to fit inside my house anymore and would need to have a special house built for me. That would make me lonely! Even though people might not notice me if I were the size of an ant and might step on me it would be worth the risk.

Reading

The reading today is about very unusual weather in winter. Check your answers on the second page.

RE

The religion we will be studying this half term is Judaism. Our question for the half term will be 'How important is it for Jewish people to do what God tells them?'.

Last week you thought about the word 'respect' and what it means to you. This week we are going to learn about the story of Passover, an important event in Judaism.

Watch this video telling us about the story of Moses and the events of Passover.

Once you have watched the video try the below reading comprehension.

The story of Passover

This week we will be thinking about the long vowel /igh/ sound. Today we will focus on the i-e split diagraph. Watch the below video and join when you are asked to do so. Have your paper and pencil ready.

Maths

We are going to be thinking about making equal groups through grouping again, this follows on from our lesson on Friday where we did a simpler version. Watch the below video and complete the worksheet as you do so, don't forget to check your work afterwards with the answers here

Value Work

Last week you thought about the meaning of our value word for January - perseverance. Today I want you to think of three examples of times where you have had to persevere with something you found challenging. I want you to write in full sentences and tell me what the outcome was (what happened in the end).

These can be about anything you found tricky to start with, eg. subtraction, riding a bike, learning to swim or reading.

PE

Make sure you are getting your exercise in whilst we are all at home during the lockdown. Joe Wicks has started his PE workouts online again for you to join in with. You can join live at 9am or access the video afterwards, these can be accessed from his YouTube channel.

**Don't forget you can join in with the Joe Wicks workout today at 9am, you can always access it afterwards too.**

**There is also the whole school worship you can join via Zoom, led by Mrs Derham, at 11am**

Friday 15th January

English

Complete these tasks –

  1. Put a circle around all the adjectives in this paragraph.
  2. Then list the adjectives in alphabetical order (hint: there are 9 to find) and sort them by what they are describing (colour, size, looks, feelings).

Duncan is a little boy who wants to colour in, but his crayons are feeling unhappy. They have quit! Red Crayon looks tired and Green Crayon looks a bit bored. Blue crayon feels angry because he has to colour in all the big animals.

  1. Rewrite the sentence below and swap the adjectives for synonyms (new words which have the same meaning).

Duncan is a little boy who wants to colour in, but his crayons are feeling unhappy.

  1. Create a list of all the synonyms you can think of for these words:

happy, sad, small, big

When you are done, you can create a picture that uses all the colours in your crayon set… just like Duncan does.

Reading

Our reading today contains some amazing facts about the human body. Did you know any of these already? Answers on the second page.

Grammar

Instead of phonics I would like you to do some grammar work. Today's is about suffixes - adding 'ed', 'ing' and 'er' to words to change their meaning. I want everyone to complete questions 1-4, if you found it easy see how far you can go. Are you able to challenge yourself to get all the way to question 12? Answers are right at the bottom of the sheet.

Maths

Today we are thinking about making equal groups again, but this time instead of sharing we will be grouping. Watch the video and whilst you do so have a go at the worksheet. You can check your answers here

Science

In Science we have been thinking about different types of materials, I want you to watch this BBC video and think about what types of materials we use and why. Once you have watched this video I want you to think about the objects in this list. For each one I would like you to think of a suitable material to use and think of a terrible material to use. For a challenge I would like you to write a sentence on each one to explain your choice.

Computing

This half term we are going to learn about coding in our computing lessons. Before we get to coding we need to know what an algorithm is. Watch this video and then write a sentence to explain what an algorithm is. Write your sentence in a way that clearly explains the word so even Florence Nightingale (who never used a computer) would understand the meaning. I will be asking on our afternoon call.

Thursday 14th January

English

Re-listen to the story, 'The Day the Crayons Came Home'.

Plot Neon Red crayon's journey back to Duncan using the map here. Don't worry if you can't print it out, just make a list of all the places that he has visited. As you make your list use the internet to find out where each place is on the map so that you can follow the journey!

When you are done, plot an alternative route back which is a bit more straightforward. Write Neon Red a set of instructions for following your route back to Duncan.

Reading

Our reading today is a recipe for how to make a healthy fruit salad. Maybe you could have a go one day at home, if you do send me a picture! Answers are on the second page.

English

For today's English I want you to listen to the story, 'The Day the Crayons Came Home'

In the book, ‘Esteban the Magnificent’ plans to run away and see the world. Imagine that you could travel around the world. Where would you go and why? Plan the itinerary for your trip (to just one place). Include the continent and the country you would like to visit and how you would get there. Don’t forget your packing list! Here is a template you could use if you wish to, or you could create your own.

Maths

We are going to be moving into division today, but to begin with we are going to think about it as sharing. Watch the video and complete the work sheet. You can check your answers here

Art

Today I would like you to draw a self-portrait - that means a picture of your own face. Look at the below video to give you a little help. It would be good if you could use a mirror to look at yourself, but if that isn't possible use a recent picture of your face.

Mindfulness

Watch and join in with the below video as a way to relax and calm yourself. How do you feel afterwards?

Tuesday 12th January

English

In the stories about Duncan’s crayons we were able to read their letters to him. In the letters the crayons describe their feelings and explain to Duncan why they feel a certain way.

I want you to re-listen to the first story – The Day the Crayons Quit and choose three of the crayons to write back to. In your replies I want you to think about what the crayons have said, and discuss those points in your writing. How could you persuade a certain crayon to come back?

If you find this challenging, try just planning a response to one or two of the crayons with some help from your adult.

Reading Comprehension

Todays reading is advice from a dentist about how you can keep your teeth and gums healthy. Answers are on the second page.

Phonics

For your phonics work today we are going to focus on the 'ea' digraph. Try this workbook. The digraph 'ea' often makes the /ee/ sound, but not always - can you think of a word with the 'ea' digraph in it that doesn't make the /ee/ sound? We will discuss this on our morning zoom call.

Maths

Today's maths is focused on practicing and applying our knowledge of the 10 times table. As I mentioned last week it's very important we know our 2, 5 and 10 times tables for when we move onto division. Watch the below video and try the worksheet. You can check your work with the answers here

RE

As I mentioned the religion we will be studying this half term is Judaism. Our question for the half term will be 'How important is it for Jewish people to do what God tells them?'.

To begin this topic I want you to think about the word 'respect'. It is one of our value words at St John's.

With an adult or someone in your house I want you to discuss the following questions. When you do I want you to really think about you answers.

  • At school, who do you respect?
  • When people ask you to do something, do you always do it? Why/why not?
  • Why do you do as some people ask you to do but not others?
  • Is it sometimes about consequences? Sometimes about who you love/respect (the relationship)?

When you have done this I would like you draw a picture of a person who you respect and listen to when they ask you to do something. Underneath your picture I want you to write 5 adjectives (describing words) that describe that person - eg. kind, strict, gentle, fair, loving.

This word list may help you to choose some adjectives. I want you to choose your words carefully.

Monday 11th January

English

Our English work this week is about a couple of books by Oliver Jeffers, 'The Day the Crayons Quit' and 'The Day the Crayons Came Home'.

You can listen to the first story here:

Today I would like you to make a list of all the different colours you can think of. Use the colours to describe what you see in your bedroom.

The colour thesaurus below will support your writing.

For example:

At the moment I am sitting on my emerald green carpet looking at the wallpaper which is honey yellow. Against the wall is a tawny brown bookcase. My charcoal black laptop is right in front of me.

This half term we are going to be making objects out of paper. This is known as the art of origami and is often associated with Japanese culture. Today we are going to have a go at making a little dog out of just a sheet of paper!
