Computing

Our vision for Computing at St John Baptist Primary School is that every child becomes digitally literate, so that they can develop a greater understanding of the world and have an impact on our increasingly technologically advanced planet.

Our school enables children to explore and use a range of technology to accomplish goals such as the green screen, radio station, recording studio and our variety of apple devices – resources we received through the Alfred and Peggy Charitable Trust resulting in a state-of-the-art Media Suite. Children have the opportunity to use computational thinking to be creative and manipulate digital content for a purpose. A range of programming opportunities, including LEGO Education, is provided so that children are confident in coding and debugging programmes.

Underpinning this, is our commitment to educating and empowering children to use the internet safely, respectfully and responsibly. Children at St John Baptist know where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content and what precautions to take. Parents, carers and the wider community are also supported with up-to-date information for keeping children safe online.

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation

  • Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems

  • Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

  • Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

After school clubs

At St John Baptist School, we run a regular weekly radio and recording club. Both of these clubs provide children with the opportunity to work on their own projects, further develop their Computing skills and refine the technical skills associated with this equipment.
